We are seeking to recruit an experienced General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist and Associate Clinical Director for our Richmond Community Adult services. This is one of five ACD roles within the Community adult services in South West London and St Georges NHS Trust. 

Our ACD must be enthusiastic and hands on leaders, who have excellent interpersonal skills and are keen to facilitate improvement to clinical pathways and services.  Working with the Clinical Director for adult services, and the wider leadership team, ACDs will support achieving the Service Lines strategic objectives and developing our partnerships at Borough, Integrated Care System, and regional and national level. We are looking for candidates who have the passion and skills to be the clinical directors and medical directors of the future.  The role will be accompanied by a development programme and peer support from fellow ACDs already working in the other boroughs of the Trust.

The team provides care for working age adults who live in the Twickenham/Teddington area of Richmond and experience severe or enduring mental illness. Twickenham RST works alongside one other Richmond RST, with care provided according to GP/PCN alignment.

The post sits within a well-established MDT that works alongside a separate Consultant-led Assessment team and interfaces with a Consultant-led Home Treatment Team and in-patient wards. 

Main duties of the job

The postholder will also be asked to provide consultant sessions to the Twickenham Recovery and Support Team based at the well-located Maddison Centre in Teddington town centre.

The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical care delivered by the team, for the provision of training for core and higher psychiatry trainees, and the teaching of St George’s University of London Medical Students. They will work closely with a Team manager, an advanced clinical practitioner and a dedicated Clinical Service Manager for the Borough (8b).

The ACD role is for 2pas plus 10% responsibility allowance (on 10pas) plus 8pas of a Consultant role with the Recovery Support Team for a 3 years fixed term period. The Trust will offer a 10pa substantive consultant contract following the completion of the 3 year ACD role.   

Teddington station with services to Waterloo and Richmond is a 7 minute walk. Kingston town centre and riverside and Bushey Royal Park are in the vicinity. There is also street parking available.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Consultant role

  • Medical leadership, working in the multi-disciplinary team and working closely with, and providing cross-cover to other Consultant Psychiatrists and occasionally their Associate Clinical Director within their borough or service line.
  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day clinical care, risk assessment, risk management, initiation of medication, and the recovery focused care delivered by the Team
  • Availability within normal working hours 5 days a week for urgent review and management including formal Mental Health Act assessments.
  • Domiciliary visits as required.
  • Providing cross-cover for the Consultant colleagues where necessary.
  • Management of complex cases
  • Allocation of resources, in collaboration with the team manager, to service users and carers.
  • Ensuring the delivery of effective, efficient and safe, recovery focused mental health care.
  • Multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working with social care, statutory and voluntary and third sector partners.

ACD role

  • To be a clinical leader for the service line
  • To support the development of place-based working / provider collaborative delivery (as appropriate to the Service Line) as part of the senior leadership of the Trust’s strategy.
  • To support the Clinical Director and Service line senior leadership team to develop relationships, services and clinical pathways that aim to make mental health integral within the Integrated Care System
  • To lead on the development and design of innovative services within the clinical area.
  • Ensure effective pathway interfaces with other mental health services provided by SWLSTG and primary care, and that the transitions between different clinical components are well designed and delivered.
  • Provide medical leadership around job planning and medical productivity in their area
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Director, Head of Nursing and Quality, Head of Psychology & Psychotherapy and Head of Service Delivery, lead on Quality Improvement and Innovation in their area.
  • Promote and deliver clinical and research governance in the Service Line.
  • Support the Service Line senior leadership team to deliver the relevant elements of the Trust’s Integrated Transformation Programme

ACD - Experience

Essential criteria
  • Leadership experience within a complex organisation delivering clinical/social care services.
  • Experience in leading governance and quality projects.

ACD - Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Medical Practitioner (with CCT in a branch of Psychiatry)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

ACD - Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Highly effective leadership skills and an understanding of collaborative leadership approaches.
  • Management skills, including staff management and performance and financial understanding
  • • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships, both within and outside the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CST.
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act
  • Specialist Registrars within three months of completing their CCSTs

Knowledge: Critical Expertise in Specialty

Essential criteria
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme or equivalent route to obtaining a CCT
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
  • A detailed knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the functions of the Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Managers' Hearings
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification

Research and Publications

  • Evidence of participation in Research and outcomes of studies
