Job overview

Burntwood Villas is a 15-bed mixed sex community rehabilitation ward. The team at Burntwood Villas is committed to providing high standards of care based on the principles of instilling hope and enabling recovery.

The team consists of a Consultant Psychiatrist who acts as clinical lead, Team leader, Psychologist, Occupational therapist, nursing team and administrator.

We are looking for a locum Specialty Doctor to join the team working with Burntwood Villas, a locked door 15-bedded inpatient community rehabilitation service for patients from both forensic and acute mental health services. This locum post has arisen due to recent creation of a Specialty Doctor post on Burntwood villa. Burntwood Villas provides a step-down facility for individuals from inpatient forensic units, high dependency/locked rehab units, out of area treatments (OATs) for the forensic South London Partnership (SLP) and the SLP Complex Care Pathway.  The interventions are delivered in three houses: Burntwood Villa is the main unit with 24 hour staffed 8 bed mixed sex unit; two single sex semi-independent houses.  The primary function is to provide community inpatient rehabilitation for patients from medium secure, low secure forensic inpatient units and acute services into a step-down recovery model facility.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for the day to day management of patients at Burntwood Villas. This will include regular assessments of patients’ physical and mental states, liaison with colleagues including in primary care and the care coordinators, preparation of tribunal reports and attendance at tribunals and attending the regular governance meetings.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring the performance indicators required by the Trust are up to date and are recorded appropriately.

The postholder will also need to attend and document ward rounds and CPAs, liaise with families and carers add take part in assessments of referrals to the service.

Tooting (Wandsworth)

Our Trust headquarters is located within the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting and we also operate in nearly 100 other locations throughout the UK.  This is easily accessible via the Northern Line (Tooting Bec Station) and via private transport.  The Trust provides subsidised parking fares for all our substantive staff.  Our main site is located immediately next to Tooting High Street where staff can easily access a range of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Burntwood Villas is on the outskirts of Springfield Hospital site in Tooting, on Burntwood Lane.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will be responsible for the day-to day management of the fifteen patients at Burntwood Villas including-

  • Providing medical treatment within a model of multi-disciplinary care
  • Attend the weekly team meeting and monthly governance meeting
  • Attend the weekly ward round
  • Take part in assessment of referrals to the service
  • Liaise with community teams
  • Attend CPAs and document the outcome of CPAs
  • Liaise with the patients’ GP and medical specialists regarding physical health concerns
  • Prepare reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings and attend and give evidence at these
  • Liaise with families and carers
  1. Team: one part time consultant (0.5 WTE)
  2. Currently a higher trainee for one year (0.2 WTE)
  3. The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director, with operational accountability  to  the Burntwood Villas RC.
  4. Clear reporting arrangements

The postholder will have access to office space at Springfield Hospital, where they will have their own desk and PC.

There is a part-time administrator at Burntwood Villas to provide administrative support.

Essential criteria
  • • MB BS or equivalent basic medical degrees
  • • MRC Psych
  • • Full GMC registration
  • • Right to work in the UK
